Artist Statement

“In this series of paintings I have created compositions of people in a variety of art spaces. I've made paintings from artists at work and in academic spaces; art viewers in museums, galleries, and art fairs; art workers in a variety of adjacent industries including conservation, shipping and appraisal; and other arts professionals in their own spaces or observing other art spaces. This series began for me at the Rhode Island School of Design where I observed fellow students at work. My more recent paintings in this series deal with the consumption of art and the way art and art spaces frame the people interacting in those spaces. I believe the juxtaposition of figure with location increases the liveliness of the emotional expression of that figure in my painting. Ultimately I aim to capture a particular thought or idea I felt when observing a given space and seeking people and expressions that would make for an expressive composition.”
