Artist Statement

“How do we wonder with purpose? Or, is it possible to be filled with a concrete kind of awe? In my work, I attempt to escort viewers into quiet spaces in their own minds where they can consider these questions. While space on my canvases is typically packed with thickly applied, bold colors, each also contains recognizable structure and rhythm. The paint calls attention to itself, inviting viewers to consider the purity or diluted quality of its colors and its viscosity on the canvas. In this consideration, viewers will be able to release, at least in the moment, usual and perhaps hard-worn ideas about the function of color in general. But viewers will also see an intentionality to my compositions. They’re constructed with patterns that mimic, sometimes overtly and sometimes covertly, that which is familiar. Horizontal and vertical lines, for example, bare similarities to the lines in a skyscraper under constructions or the ways in which trees are aligned in the woods. So, as viewers consider my work, I hope something both ethereal and definite can happen: That viewers might realize a deeper and much more reliable reality beyond, or perhaps underneath, what we can see. The color, light, structure, and shadow I put into my paintings serve as a pathway to the certain, even permanent, realm of beauty.”
